OK. I was just in a car accident. I've never been in a car accident before. Dude, it's surreal.
My former boss, Paul, and I are still friendly and we talk on the phone. Today, I chatted with him for a bit, and he said he was in my area to meet with a client over lunch, and that he'd forgotten his cash and bank card. I agreed to spot him some cash, and he parked across the street from the Citibank, around the corner from my building.
I got the cash and went to sit in the car with him and he offered to drive me back to the front of the building. Now, LaGuardia Place is a narrow street, with just one lane in either direction. As Paul was pulling out of the space, a truck came at us on his side, so he stopped the car, but the truck kept going. Paused. Then kept going! Upon the second hit, the car was dragged forward by the bumper, and since I hadn't had a chance to pull my seatbelt on, I was jerked forward, hitting my head on the roof of the car.
*deep breath*
I am ok. Paul is ok. The car: not ok. The entire front bumper was a twisted piece of metal. The driver of the truck came out and took pictures, had an accident report with his company's letterhead, and then proceeded to tape up the bumper so that Paul could at least drive the car as far as the car rental place. The cops finally came, and I finally was able to give my statement and leave.
I had intended to run out to the car, give Paul the money, and run back to work. I was gone for over and hour, due to the accident crap. I was shaken up, but didn't want to get upset in front of Paul so I went back to the building before the cops got there and got our friend Jessica, who calmed me down a lot. I know it's not a major accident (thank God) but I've never experienced anything of the sort, and I feel like the world's biggest dumbass for not having put my seatbelt on right away. Ugh.
But I'm sure the insurance company will cover Paul's expenses, as it was not his fault. And neither of us was hurt, although Jesse suggested I have my dad (a doctor) check me out to be sure. She's gone through this before, and felt fine right after the accident only to wake up feeling like crap the next day. I'll take her advice.
Ok, I am going to eat a sandwich now. I haven't actually eaten anything all day!
