hellish day a la AIM
Nov. 14th, 2003 03:17 pmYesterday,
queenofserpents, my lovely sister, IM'd me from her new screenname, asking me if "the link" is in her profile. I click, and immediately this crap starts happening asking me to download something or other. I quickly CRTL-ALT-DEL it, and get out of there, thinking I'm fine.
Well, this morning when I got to work and logged on to my comp, my friend Ims me to say that she clicked on the link in MY profile, and that it put all kinds of porn and what not on her computer! OUR WORK COMPUTERS! We immediately got nervous that we would get into trouble and started deleting everything we possibly could. Finally I figured out that the problem lay with a little file called info.htm that was hanging out in my userdata folder. It is undeletable. I've uninstalled and reinstalled AIM twelveteen times and it keeps coming back. Thank goodness Raph pointed us to Ad-aware, which is awesome, as it scans your whole computer and removes all tracking, datamining, and other annoying sneaky little cookie-type things. I got rid of 23 things!! Sari got rid of over 300!!
Run, don't walk to download this!
