Since the PoA movie posters hit the streets and subway stations and sides of buses, I've been feeling a renewed sense of outrage on behalf of Ron and Ron fans everywhere. Ron is continually made to look like the freakin' court jester, and I am tired of it. Ron is loyal, bright, and funny, and the books show that. The movies, however, reduce his character to a few dumbass lines, intended to be funny but really are just making fun of him, and give his more serious or deep lines to others.
Namely Hermione. Whom I love, of course. I love the entire Trio, for different reasons, but it really bothers me that their characters are boiled down to caricatures of themselves...and sometimes compilations! I know that the books had to be adapted into a workable screenplay, but I can't imagine how JKR allowed this to happen to her Ron. It's just unnecessary. The line will still be said. WHY can't it be the original character saying it?
I am talking, of course, about the BIG LINE in PoA, my favorite book by the way. The part where Ron says, "If you want to kill him, you'll have to kill us first." It's so emotional and so raw. The boy is standing up for his best friend, broken leg and all, in front of someone he believes to be a ruthless mass murderer! Give Ron some credit for this, please!
