Got those first day jitters. I haven't done anything new in a while. After graduating from college, I haven't stepped foot in a classroom for anything other than the ocassional Excel or Powerpoint class I've taken for the purpose of goofing off with my coworkers. (Contrary to what you may think, my work at the Budget Office does not entail but basic knowledge of these). So today, I am feeling way out of my comfort zone.
Today is the first day of class.
I'm taking that Books From Writer to Reader course. It's non-credit, so really, the worst that can happen is I hate it and I'm out the money for registration and for the book I bought last week. It was a $21 product of NYU Reprographics, which really just meant that it was a reprint (with permission) of a real published book. This book happens to have been published in 1989. Now, I don't know much about the publishing industry yet, but I do know that it must have changed quite a bit in the last 15 years! We'll see.
I'm pretty sure that I'll have to do that first day ice breaker where one by one, in sequence, everyone introduces him/herself and tells some fact about their life such as where they work and why they are taking the class. I am one of those people who hates these ice breaker things. I just don't see a need for anyone to know my name just to take a class. But as
kingraph pointed out, this could be used as a networking opportunity. Where better to meet people who are interested in the publishing business? Plus the instructor is a senior editor at Simon & Schuster and has even won teaching awards for NYU SCPS.
Well, I am off to eat a little salad for dinner (class ends at 8, I'll be getting home around 8:45ish) and read some of my book. No, not the text. Wish me luck!
