Aunt Elsa

On Friday, my mom told me that my Aunt Elsa, the mother of the gorgeous Karina and Vanesa that were my flower girls, and the gorgeous Laura who carried my train, was hit by a truck as she was crossing the street. She was on her way to work on Thursday morning, and the truck did not stop at a stop sign. She is ok, THANK GOD. But she is pretty banged up, and all her doctors, including my father, consider it a miracle that she is alive and that she wasn't hurt worse. She has a broken ankle that they've operated on, some back injuries (that don't require surgery, as we first thought), and she is cut up and bruised everywhere else. The worst bruise, the most miraculous one, really, is on her left side on her ribcage, where you can still see the imprint the truck's tire left on her body. That she didn't crack any ribs is amazing! I've spoken to her and she seems ok, though still a little shaken up, and yesterday afternoon she was able to see the girls for the first time. Needless to say we are all praying that she continues to do well, and she may be released from the hospital as early as today or tomorrow.

For those of you who are legal-minded at times like this, my uncle is already looking into what can be done, especially for her medical bills. The hospital has already collected CASH from this woman for use of the telephone and TV in her room! I thought they just billed you for everything at the end?!

I know that I am guilty of crossing the street trusting that an oncoming vehicle will stop when they are supposed to, but as we've seen, accidents do happen, and there is no reason to tempt fate, so from now on, I will be even more careful. I mean, this happened to Elsa on a pretty quiet street in Union City, NJ. Imagine me here in NYC, acting like I own the street all the time!

We are so thankful. She has 3 small children who've already lost their father, so this would have been just...unthinkable.

I'm so glad your aunt is okay -- could have been so much worse for her. I hope her medical bills aren't too high and can be covered -- any chance of catching the driver? *hugs*

Thanks, Liss. The driver did stop at the scene, and although he blamed her for being in his way (the nerve), his insurance has been notified and they will probably have to pay the medical bills. I am going to post an update on Elsa's condition in a little bit. *hugs back* :)
