My sister just called to tell me there is a mermaid baby on Oprah. Doctors say that each leg and foot has visible bones that can move independently of each other, and there is a surgery scheduled for late February to separate them. What I would like to know is: how is this child going to feel when she's growing up, everyone's seen her in her mermaid baby state? A little anger towards her parents for parading her in the media like a circus freak show circa 1912? Maybe the parents want to bring awareness of Mermaid Sydrome to the masses; even though it occurs approximately as often as conjoined twins, this is the first case I've ever heard of.

Anyway, just thought it was curious.

ETA: Apparently this episode of Oprah was an update, and the baby's legs have already been separated. Still, my question stands: who wants to see this video of themselves once they grow up?

I know I'd be mad at my parents for parading me around like a freak show. Especially on something as national as Oprah.

Oh, I should go back and edit my post. Apparently, the separation surgery has already taken place, and yesterday's Oprah was an update on her condition. Still, though, I'd be PISSED to grow up and see the video of myself still mermaid-ed, and my parents soaking up some Oprah 15-minute fame!
