I just became a U.S. citizen in the summer of 2003, and today I voted for the first time. I had a wonderful feeling of accomplishment, knowing that I am now a part of the oldest continuous democracy in the world. I did my part as a citizen, and it feels good. Please, if you are a registered voter, go vote today. I don't want to tell anyone who to vote for, but please go with your conscience, and consider more than one issue. I know of people who want to vote for Bush because of the tax cuts, or for Kerry because he's not Bush, or things like that. It may be too late for this message, but it's important to do a little research to have an idea where the candidates stand on the issues. By issues I do not mean just the ones the media choses to play up. Whatever is important to you, look into it and decide accordingly.
Voting was super easy for me this morning, and the lines were short for people who knew their election district. Apparently my district had a small amount of voters assigned to it, because once I got there, only 2 people were ahead of me, and when I came out, there was no one waiting in that line. It did give me pause, because the line for another district was around the corner of the hallway of the school we were in. I wonder how they assign those districts.
I'm really antsy to find out the outcome of this election. Been reading up on the electoral college and trying to understand it (it still doesn't make sense to me that in 2004 we still don't have a direct election, wtf?).
randombtchchick posted an email from Michael Moore's mailing list on her journal, and I am going to place it behind a cut tag for those interested in reading it. It addresses various groups, and is very interesting and thought-provoking. Please read if you are so inclined.
